How I Organize My Closet - a sneak peek into how I advise my clients

Personally, I feel best when I’m in a monochromatic colour scheme of black, navy or cream. I accessorize with expensive accessories to elevate the look and try and stick with a very neutral and timeless palette so my closet isn’t in constant rotation.

If I love something, I buy a few of the same item.

So how do I advise or work with my clients?

Here is the general advise and Q&A I go through with my clients . . .

Understand your go-to and how you shop.

Do you always reach for the same thing?

Does it make you feel amazing? If not, remove it!

Rule of thumb

1) Creating a capsule wardrobe of sorts is key. I like monochromatic because it is timeless.

2) If you want to buy something new - you need to get rid of something old.

3) Most items should mix and match to get the most out of your wardrobe.

How do I organize?

Pull everything out of the closet!

Sort by category - casual vs business, colour coded, seasonal

Place as many hangers as you can in your closet without it being tight.

Start putting items back in. As it gets tighter, stop. You’ve reached your max space for your closet.

Put seasonal items in the forefront of the closet. You need to see what you have or you won’t reach for it.

I like to hang my shirts / hangers facing the same direction. This not only looks appealing but it preserves the structure of your clothes and let’s face it, is aesthetically pleasing to look at.

If things look a little tattered - donate it and replace it!

Once you’ve reached your max hanger capacity - never buy more hangers unless they break. This will keep you on track with a manageable closet that you feel great in.

Tools:

I love a good wooden hanger for more structured items and a velvet hanger in cream or black with gold hardware so it looks nice for thinner items - great space saver also. Amazon link to 30 white & gold hangers
Ikea has an equally great wooden option. Home Sense usually has these also.

Try to avoid baskets or bins - out of sight out of mind.

Shoes can be put heel to toe to save space, but having it be more visual (like your favourite boutique) is much more pleasing to the eye.

Buy a steamer! This will save your life! You’ll save time and your clothes will last longer. Steam is much gentler on your clothes than a hot iron. I’ve recently found a great alternative to the standard standing steamer - made by Rowenta it’s a great combo of steamer and iron for those more pesky wrinkles. And it looks good in your space!

Closed doors in a walk in is always the way to go.
If you have room - add a piece of decor to make it feel more luxurious and inviting. Art or a pouffe.
