Why Designers Love Mood Boards
As a professional stylist, I always start with a mood board. I do this to help visualize my ideas and to test out decor items together. It serves as a data dump of the design concept in my head that I can share with my clients and tweak as the space comes together for me. Pinterest is a great tool for this, but I prefer to create a one-page layout of the elements to truly visualize.
Many People Suffer from Design Anxiety
Having a digital copy of the space on your phone, usually accompanied by a shopping list, is a great way to stay on track with design choices.
Mood boards evoke a feeling or a “mood” for the space in the early stages, that becomes more concrete and can evolve as you start to make your decor selections. I walk into a space and immediately know what I would do to make the space feel more calm, useful or beautiful, but it isn’t until I drop everything into a mood board that I see it come to life and then make my edits.
What Goes into a Mood Board?
Key Elements - architecture and colours of elements you can’t change - this part is key to keeping costs low and usually where people tend to get nervous or go wrong and make multiple edits.
Style - colours, personality and goals
Existing Furniture - reusing what you already have helps to keep costs low
Colour Palette - the mood of where I’m going
Feeling -do the decor items fit into my overall style, or am I just attracted to them
Wish List -inspiration shared by my client
Materials - textures, mood for the space, colour combinations, woods, metals
Textiles - linen, texture
Wow Factor - key pieces that will create a timeless and unique interest in the space
Interior design should be fun!
I believe designing a space should be as much personal as functional. I aim to provide a mood board that sets the stage and can be used as a jumping-off point for the space. I hate being wasteful if I don’t have to, so keeping as many pieces that can be repurposed is a big part of my planning stage. To achieve a space I need to fully understand my client’s needs and usage of the space. A mood board can help us talk through the design or placement of furniture.
Working with family heirlooms and “cannot part with” items can be challenging. This is where a discovery call is so important. My goal is to make sure you leave your experience thinking “Wow, I could not have done that without Sherri”.
Consider hiring me to do your mood board if you struggle to see the vision of what a space could or should be, have trouble pulling colours and textures together or have a challenging space that just won’t cooperate.
I’m gifted at seeing past the ugly and looking at the bare bones of a space. In my spaces, everything has a beautiful home to live in and spaces feel inviting and calm. Items you need to have out for everyday functional routines don’t have to be an eyesore. I get creative to make the entire space and the items in it feel cohesive and intentional.
Repurposing items you already own first helps to keep costs low and I only bring in key elements that spark joy and add the wow factor that will tie it all together.
I want you to fall in love with your space again!
